Steve DiPaola

Steve DiPaola is an Associate Professor in the School of Interactive Arts & Technology at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia and is the Principle Investigator for SFU on CATGames. He directs the iVizLab where his work strives to make interactive systems bend more to the human experience by incorporating biological & cognitive models. Much of his work is on making computation models (for gaming, art, and research) of very human ideals such as expression , emotion, behavior and creativity. He is known to create computational systems that are used by artists and scientists alike. He came to SFU from Stanford and NYIT CGL and has held leadership positions at Electronic Arts, Saatchi Innovation and Silicon Valley start-ups. His art has been exhibited international including the AIR and Tibor de Nagy galleries in NYC, the Whitney Museum and the Smithsonian. He has collaborated with Nam June Paik and Kraftwerk and is known for making new media tools used equally by artists and scientists.

Ron Wakkary

Ron Wakkary is an Associate Professor in the School of Interactive Arts & Technology at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia. His primary research is in interaction design with a focus on tangible computing and responsive environments, and the study of “everyday design.” His past research projects include an adaptive audio and tangible user interface museum guides with the Canadian Nature Museum and the Surrey museum, ambient intelligent environments for physical play, and a mobile-based social game for mobile communities. Wakkary led the Am-I-able Network for Responsive and Mobile Environments, a national research network in the design of wearable and ambient intelligence computing and was a lead researcher in the Canadian Design Research Network and CATGAmes, a national research network for games.The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, Canadian Heritage, Canarie Inc., Canada Council, Networks Centres of Excellence, and Canada Foundation for Innovation have funded his research. Wakkary’s public and academic service has included the Canadian Culture Online Advisory Board to advise the Minister of Canadian Heritage, the College of Reviewers for the Canada Research Chair Program, Banff New Media Institute Research Advisory Board. He has served on several conference program committees including Tangible and Embedded Interaction, ACM CHI, ACM Multimedia, ACM Creativity and Cognition Conference, Archives & Museum Informatics: Museums and the Web Conference.

K.J. Lee

Kyung Jae Lee is a doctoral student in the School of Interactive Arts and Technology (SIAT) at Simon Fraser University. His PhD research investigates the social affective engagement of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) based on an adaptive facial animation system. He has a background in computer graphics technology, cognitive science and consumer behavior and was involved in number of research projects including comparative usability testing in 3D animation software (Softimage Inc), cross-cultural color preference (KASIT & L’Oreal Arts & Science Foundation in Japan) and VR virtual mall simulation (Target Corporation & Simon Property Group Inc). He was previously a visiting assistant professor in the Department of Computer Graphic Technology at Purdue University.

Joshua Tanenbaum

Joshua is a PhD Student investigating interactive storytelling and games in the SFU SIAT EMIIE Lab. His research involves applying techniques from the humanities to the study of games and narrative. Josh completed his MA at SIAT in 2008. His thesis was a close reading of the popular game Oblivion from three perspectives: believability, performativity, and adaptivity. Each of these three analytical lenses brought to bear a different discourse and vocabulary to the task of analyzing Oblivion, resulting in three distinct, but complementary readings of the game. His PhD research will be exploring how to use techniques from AI and User Modeling to adapt interactive narrative experiences to the preferences of the reader. He is currently developing the conceptual and theoretical foundations for the Tangible Ubiquitous Narrative Environments (TUNE) project - an interactive narrative that will take place in a physical mixed reality space. Joshua’s CATGames research, done under the supervision of Jim Bizzocchi, is an investigation of the relationship between story, play, and embodiment at the interface level. This is motivated by the recent popularity of so-called “non-traditional-interfaces” that depart from the canonical control pad mechanism that has dominated console game play since its inception.

Veronica Zammitto

Jason Boileau

Jason Boileau is a graduate student in the School of Interactive Arts and Technology at Simon Fraser University. He completed a Bachelor of Science in Interactive Arts and worked in the media promotions field before returning to complete a Masters of Arts. His thesis research is focused on developing prototyping tools for electronic tangible games.

Nathan Waddington

Nathan is a graduate student in the SIAT program at Simon Fraser University. He has working experience in embedded programming, and is using this experience to help the CATGames project to build gestural and tangible prototyping tools for gaming. Nathan is focusing on the Design stream in SIAT.

Nathan Cheng

Nathan is a student in the School of Interactive Arts and Technology at Simon Fraser University, and is a graduate of the BC College of Optics. He finished his Cisco Certified Network Associate program at Kwantlen University College, and was industry trained and Certified Solidworks Assocate. Currently, in his part time he works in R&D at Bonica Precision, Hostile Environments Product Designer for Sony in Japan. When in Canada he works as a research assistant at Simon Fraser University for the School of Communications and School of Interactive Art and Technology, and is a TA for a materials in design course, running labs and helping students with physical prototyping.

Alice Tai

Alice has recently graduated with a BSc from the Interactive Arts and Technology program and a minor from Commnications at Simon Fraser University. She has participated on an international exchange to Malmo University, Sweden, where she specialized in interaction design. She brings to the project her diverse experience from four internships, including design positions at the Downtown Surrey BIA and Research in Motion.

Evan Miller

Evan Miller is an undergraduate student in the School of Interactive Arts & Technology at Simon Fraser University where he studies game design and is currently doing research into AI personality frameworks and dynamic relationship models. He is also the head of a small independent game development company, Pixelante Game Studios, and is applying his programming skills and production experience to the creation of development tools for CATGames.
