Dr. Tom Calvert is Foundation Professor in the Centre for Digital Media at the Great Northern Way Campus and Emeritus Professor in the School of Interactive Arts and Technology at SFU Surrey. He has degrees in electrical engineering from University College London (B.Sc.), Wayne State University (MSEE) and Carnegie-Mellon University (Ph.D.).He came to SFU as a faculty member in Kinesiology in 1972. He later was joint-appointed to Computing Science and Engineering Science. He held a number of administrative positions including that of Vice President for Research and Information Systems from1985 to 1990. From 1990 - 1992 he took leave from SFU to serve as President of the Science Council of BC. In 1995, together with Linda Harasim, he co-founded the TeleLearning Network of Centres of Excellence. In 1997 he again took leave from SFU to become Vice President for Research and External Affairs at the new Technical University of BC. In 2002 Tech BC was merged with Simon Fraser and he served as Acting Director of the new SFU School of Interactive Arts and Technology from 2002 to 2004.His research interests focus on computer animation and human computer interaction. His work on computer animation has resulted in the Life Forms system for human figure animation and dance choreography which is now developed and marketed by SFU spin-off company Credo Interactive Inc. He is the author or co-author of over 200 publications.

Dr. Calvert is a registered professional engineer in British Columbia, he is a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering and from 2000 to 2006 he was a member of the NSERC Council.
